Clash between army and militia ends with dozens of people killed in Niger

Among the 49 confirmed dead were 40 terrorists, four Niger soldiers and five civilians

A clash between national security forces and local militia fighters on Sunday ended with at least 49 people killed in southwestern Niger, near the border with Mali, reports the Chinese newspaper Global Times. Among the confirmed dead were 40 terrorists, four Nigerian soldiers and five civilians.

The attack took place in the afternoon, when a hundred heavily armed terrorists attacked the village of Tchoma Bangou on motorcycles. According to the Niger Ministry of Defense, no terrorist group claimed responsibility for the attack.

“The prompt and vigorous reaction of the FDS (Forces de Defence and Security, for the French acronym) made it possible to repel the attack and inflict heavy losses on the enemy,” says a government statement. Motorcycles and heavy weapons, including Russian AK-47 rifles, were seized by the military.

jihadist insurgency

One of the poorest countries in the world, Niger has for years been fighting an insurgency by jihadist groups near the border with Mali in the southwest of the country. The triple border, which also includes Burkina Faso, is strongly influenced by extremists. In the southeast, the country borders Nigeria, the biggest threat is Boko Haram.

Tchoma Bangou is located in the Tillaberi region, near the triple border, and has been in emergency since 2017. Due to the violent actions of armed groups, the government even banned motorcycle traffic for a year and ordered the closure of markets suspected of supplying supplies. local militias.
